Linux Operating System comes with kill command to terminate a process. Kill command send a signal, a specified signal to be more perfect to a process. The kill command can be executed in a number of ways, directly or from a shell script. In order to kill a process, we need to know the Process ID of a process. A Process is an instance of a program. Every-time a program starts, automatically an unique PID is generated for that process.
Every Process in Linuxhave a pid. Init decides and allows itself to be killed, where kill is merely a request for a shutdown. To know all the processes and correspondingly their assigned pidrun the following ps command.
Before we step ahead and execute a kill commandsome important points to be noted:. You must be aware of process name, before killing and entering a wrong process name may screw you.
This is the only command of this family, which takes process name as argument in-place of process number. To kill all mysql instances along with child processes, use the command as follow. Kill : xkill -a. For more information run man xkill. Run : xinit. Also startx but this command is to start an instance and not the server itself. For more information run man xint and man startx. I don't believe it's possible to kill Xserver from GUI, and even if it were, it would not be the right way to do it.

Once necessary, just uncomment the line for which mode you wanna enter. Reboot, and you should enter the command line directly. You can do this from a gui. Just run jockey-gtk or search for "Additional Drivers" from the dash. Once it is installed, open Nvidia Settings and go from there. You could open gnome-terminal and type sudo telinit 1. This would drop you to run level 1 single user mode and kill the gui services.

The problem appears to be that the GUI thread is blocking - waiting for user input. I thought that the easiest way was to kill the GUI thread, but it is not that simple - or so it appears.

It only takes a minute to sign up. I would like to start Debian without the GUI and then just type commands in to launch the desired programs which are located on my local machineeg. I already do a similar thing when ssh ing in to other machines on the LAN - it is handy if I need to visualise csv data for example in soffice.
I have found some instructions for disabling the GUI on startup with Debianhowever I am reluctant to try them out for fear of being locked out of using the web browser once I do this I will need it to seek help using the browser if I get stuck. Will this work? I don't have an unmodified debian system at hand, so I can't say which if any that will be -- possibly 2.
Do not choose 0, 1, or 6. Once the dm is disabled, you boot to a login console. From there you can start X with the command startx. This includes a default DE and if you've been using gnome that will probably be it.
